"The Childrens Crusade" is an apocalyptic fiction story set in 1970's America. The story follows 18 year old Hindel Krause as she navigates through this new infested and decaying world and her relationship with fellow survivor, Frederica Schreiber, as they journey south to where society is rumoured.
Hindel is the stubborn and logical protagonist of the story. She is short tempered and prefers to be alone. Hindel is 18 years old. She was born in upstate New York where she grew up in a secluded cabin the woods. She lived with her mother and father. Her father taught her almost everything she knows about hunting and guns. The rest was taught to her by the United States Army. After becoming orphaned at the age of 15 she was taken into the army where she was trained to fight off the infected and dedicate herself to her country (or what was left of it). After the war "ended" Hindel was sent back to her home state, from there she decided to start traveling.
Frederica Shreiber is the happy-go-lucky and energetic deuteragonist of the story. She has a short attention span and loves the company of others. Frederica is 18 years old and hails from the Vermont countryside. She lived on a small farm with her sister and 2 brothers. She grew up mostly helping her mother with housework but loved to contribute to the farm anytime she could. Eventually, her brothers were drafted into the war, leaving the rest of her family to hold down the farm. In the last few months of the war Frederica was drafted into the army. She didn't do much because the war ended quickly after then. She returned back to Vermont with her brothers and sister, and they started to travel together until getting split up after a particularily gruesome attack.
